Do The Media Construct Social Reality?!
We are surrounded by media on every front.
The avg. person spends more than 1/2 of their lea sure time with media - and many spend a majority of their working time with media. (iPods, smartphones, computers, tv, radio, etc.)
So I ask, "Do media construct reality or reflect reality?"
Both? eh, not really..more so it constructs.
Reality Shows?! Ha!
Who's reality would we be reflecting? There are so many audiences..we need to be aware of that.
"All you know is what you're being told" - Dr

Our Job
To create messages that generate enthusiasm and cultivate audiences - we INFORM, EXPLAIN, and ENTERTAIN
We want the audience to do something in particular in response to our message - so we have to craft messages that appeal to audiences in specific ways - how do we know how to do this?
Dr. Woodard is trying to sell her Star Trek collection, she has us build the website..what else are you gonna do?
Find out who they are, where they hang out..
Post bits on Facebook, link to other blogs
Make a booth? Do you have the demographics to get the people to come by or will they just laugh at my Star Trek collection.
Media is only in the hands of a few corporations (Disney, Viacom)
How the audience receives the message is discussed in chapter 2.
